PennDOT will improve the Franklin Road corridor from Route 228 to Peters Road. This project includes updating the current two-lane roadway to current design standards, including 5’ shoulders for bikes and pedestrians. Left turn lanes will be added at key intersections throughout the corridor. The project does not include improvements to the intersection with Route 228. PennDOT awarded this contract for construction in December 2023 to Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc.
The four-year project includes:
Since 2020, the Township in conjunction with Butler County received two U.S. Department of Transportation grants through the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) program.
The first project expanded Freedom Road from Commonwealth Drive to Haine School Road. Using a $20 million BUILD grant, construction wrapped in late 2022.
The second phase is using a $25 million BUILD grant to expand Freedom Road from Haine School Road to Powell Road. Work began in 2022 and is ongoing. It has an estimated completion date of 2025.
These projects follow the full replacement and expansion of the Freedom Road Turnpike Bridge, which was completed in 2021. Work included a new steel beam six-lane bridge, widening, paving, drainage, signal upgrade/replacement, and lighting work. As part of the accelerated bridge construction program, the structure was built in sections off-site and moved into its final position, requiring only short-term closures on the PA Turnpike or Freedom Road.
The Rochester Road Turnpike Project aims to upgrade the Turnpike from milepost 26 to 28. In addition to expanding lanes along Rochester Road, work includes widening the existing corridor from four lanes to six lanes and making general corridor improvements. A feasibility study will determine the best approach to adding lanes to Rochester Road and making it pedestrian-friendly. This project is in its early stages.
